HOME TOWN WOMEN NEW CHAMPS
QUEEN BEEZ TAKE TITLE AND $2500.00 1ST PRIZE

There is an old adage in the fight game, “You don’t dethrone champions by decision - you win by knockout.”

That theory has stood the test of time and wisdom; since champions do not go easy.  So it was for WAFFF’s defending 2004 champion TNT - out of the New York metropolitan area.  TNT not only won the 2004 title in Fort Lauderdale, but followed it up with an impressive hard fought victory in Las Vegas, NV.  TNT was and still is a team that knows how to win, but sometimes knowing and doing are two different things, especially when your opponent also knows how to win.

The Queen Beez, out of Broward and Dade counties in south Florida produced a stunning and convincing victory on Sunday February the 19th over TNT to win the 2005 Sunshine Classic AAAA division by a score of 27 to 0.  In spite of the score, the game - played under crystal clear Florida skies - featured hard blocks, scintillating  offensive plays, and stingy defense.  TNT did not go easy - much like that proverbial heavyweight champ - they fought hard, had many opportunities, but kept coming up short.

Anita Marks, the quarterback of the Queen Beez, threw consistent pin-point passes to both of her extremely talented and quick wide outs.  Tammy Terrell, the left side wide out, and tournament MVP broke loose for two long receptions - caught in full stride - for a pair of six pointers.  TNT countered with double coverage on both of the wide outs, but that opened up the Queen Beez very talented running game that led to additional scores.

While the final score may have appeared to be a knock out, the game was well contested and both teams demonstrated that they have that quality that is often referred to on Broadway as a Boffo opening and closing.  A quality that makes for great theater.

So, when all is said and done, we have a new and worthy champion.  Congratulations, Queen Beez, and thanks to all the teams for an outstanding tournament!

The 2005 Sunshine Classic was presented under the direction of the Women’s American Flag Football Federation (WAFFF), the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Broward County Board of Commissioners.
