Big Lights, Big City,
BIG HEARTS - Got to love New York!
This was a tournament
for the record books!
wrap-up from Fort Lauderdale, FL
February 6th - 8th
 |
|
If you were looking for lots of excitement, great
competition, and some all around fun, the 2004 Sunshine Classic defined what you
were looking for. Teams from as far away as Houston and
as near as Miami - such as Virginia Badd Girls,
Virginia Playmakers, Chicago Free Agents, New York TNT, Florida Stingrays,
Florida Anger Management, Miami Brew Crew,
|
|
Atlanta Lyte & Tyte, Atlanta FDNY, Houston Fire & Ice,
Cincinnati Rats - brought everything they had to this year's tournament in
sunny Fort Lauderdale, FL.
|
We couldn't have asked for nicer weather conditions, every day
was sunny and reached high's in the low 80's. However, the heat was just
as hot on the fields.
We had five(5) overtime games in round robin play. That set
the tone for the rest of the tournament. Every game was the one to watch!
The
FL Stingrays(1st seed) & Virginia Badd Girls(2nd seed)
looked like the teams to beat - with identical 3-0 records - coming out of round robin play. However, TNT(3rd seed)
never gave up after losing a long fought out battle to the Badd
Girls in a triple overtime game by coming up short by just 2 yards.
After TNT's tough loss, Lynn Lewis, TNT Head Coach,
shouted to members of her team, "It's tomorrow that counts ladies, it's tomorrow
that counts". Well, TNT listened and came through for Coach Lewis.
Playing their hearts out against Houston Fire & Ice in a championship game -
with a stunning late come from behind 13-12 victory. It was a game to add
to the WAFFF record books. |
|
TNT took home the 1st place Cash Prize ($500.00) and the WAFFF
championship duffle bags so they can show off their winnings. Lori
DeVivio, TNT, was
chosen MVP of the championship game. Lori showed what true gustiness
was about while displaying a "never say die" attitude throughout the tournament.
Houston Fire & Ice finished in second place with an
unbelievable effort - they played most of the tournament with just 9 players.
For their efforts they received a second place cash prize of $250.00. Houston
was full of speed, agility and down right "fun to watch" defense but came up
short in the championship game. Badd Girls received a $150.00 voucher for any future WAFFF
tournament for finishing third.
The championship game was full of excitement, great passes,
unbelievable catches and all around quickness. There was even a half time
show presented by the Chicago Free Agents teams, they brought the word "relay
racing" to a whole different level.
Thank you again for participating and please help us in our
efforts to promote WAFFF all across the country. We can't do this with
you! |

TNT dedicated their win to:

Sharon Pascale
(1973 - 2001) |
Note:
TNT dedicated their 1st place win to
Sharon Pascale. Sharon was TNT's outside
linebacker. She played with TNT since she was out of
college and died tragically in a car accident on December 25 2001.
In her all-too-short time with us, Sharon was an inspiration to everyone and
everything around her. At the Awards Ceremony, Lynn Lewis, coach of TNT, held up
the championship check and said, "This one's for you Sharon, this one's for
you."
